Jay’s music is uniquely futuristic with timeless influences. She lays melodic rap vocals with a Grime/American Rap type vibe and Sings with a new-age 90s RnB type feel. She aims to create experiences with her music by taking the listener on a feel-good journey.
1) What inspired you to be a part of the music industry?
I wrote poems since before I can remember. At the age of 11, I'd moved house and made friends at the local park. These friends took me to the studio where I started recording and the journey continued from there.
2) What are your thoughts on the hip-hop industry at the moment?
Mixed thoughts to be honest, I feel positive that it’s continuously moving and that the sound is consistently developing. Although I do feel there are some mainstream artists who aren’t my cup of tea – but that doesn’t mean to say their not someone elses. And theres still a number of mainstream artists who I rate and feel have continued to embrace hip-hop culture as well as allowing it to move forward.
3) Do you enjoy grinding it out independently or would you prefer to be signed to a major label?
I’ve been on my grind of 12 years now and theres always ups and downs. I’ve definitely enjoyed the journey and learnt from the lessons. I work with good people and I do a lot of things for myself. I do sometimes think about signing due to funds, but when the times right I know the right thing will happen.
4) What do you think goes into building a loyal fanbase?
It’s about creating quality content consistently. The next track has to be just as good, if not better than the previous. I think competitions and freebies are cool too – it’s a way of giving back and showing that you’re grateful. I think the main thing about having a loyal fanbase is making sure that you’re loyal to them and always staying true to yourself.
5) What sort of online promo and marketing are you doing to reach your fanbase?
I use all social media platforms, boosted posts as well as organic. I also use platforms that release similar sorts of music with a larger following.
6) If you could collaborate with any well-known artist who would it be?
Honestly, My answer is constantly changing on this one as it all depends on how I feel at the time. I know that I’d love to make a track with Jess Glynn though, I like how uplifiting her first album was and I would love to write something along the same theme with her.
7) What are your plans for your next project?
I’ve got a catalogue of tracks and a 12 month release plan – and I cannot wait for you to hear every single one of them! :P
